How I Became a Scratch Golfer…Through Instagram

On August 10, 2022, I played in a tournament at Brentwood Country Club. It was the first time that I had to play as a plus handicap (+1 from the tees we played that day). Fittingly, our last hole that day was rated the 18 handicap, and I made a par, for a net bogey, which was an odd feeling. It was the 2nd time in consecutive years where my handicap index dropped to a .1, which is statistically within the top 2% of male golfers in America. Since I was a 10 handicap when I first joined a country club in 2013, a number of guys have asked me how I made this progression without getting customary lessons from golf professionals, so I’ve shared the following insights with them. But, please know that I don’t claim to have it all figured out. I can easily shoot in the 80s on an off day, and there are many, many better golfers than I. However, learning more about the golf swing is one of the most fascinating journeys in life. I also put this together for our young son, in case I’m unable to teach him the game, for any reason. In sharing it, I hope that you’ll come away with something that helps your game. A huge thanks to the coaches and creators who have supplied the content, especially George Gankas who has transformed golf instruction. All the best, Kai Sato. Nov/2022.

It’s all about impact.

Every pro golfer gets to the same position at impact, encompassing these three key concepts:

  • Weight forward

  • Trail palm facing downward

  • Hands in front of ball, creating shaft lean

Pause at the top for power & control.

Rotate into impact, don’t “swing” anything.

*Final note, most mistakes are made before we ever move the club, so first spend time learning proper grip, alignment, posture, and ball positioning.
